Sadie -
You were so quiet yesterday, but you made up for it tonight!
When I got home, you had plenty to say. You followed me around the room with your eyes and coo-ed and murmered while your mom and I were eating dinner.
You must have worn yourself out. You were so tired by bath time, your mom and I thought you might fall asleep in the water!
I love you so.

Day 101 : Good Behavior
Sadie -
I can't believe you are already over 100 days old...
But then I can't imagine what the thousands of days before you were even like now!
Some old friends came over tonight and you must have wanted to impress them. You were quiet and cute and you went to bed without a fight.
You have been so relaxed and mellow today, your mom and I are actually a little worried that you might be getting sick!
Love ya -

Day 100 : Wiggle...
Sadie -
You get so irritated when I lay you down to go to sleep at night! I put the pacifier in your mouth and you try to scream and chew on it at the same time. It is so funny because when you are trying to chew and scream simultaneously, the sound that emerges from you sounds something akin to the word "wiggle." I joke that you are trying to remind yourself to keep moving so you won't accidentally fall asleep.
"Wiggle, Wiggle, Wiggle, Wiggle..."
I am a little flattered that you want to stay up and hang out with me instead of going to sleep, but it is not good for you to miss out on snoozing!
Trust me!
I love you so much!

Day 99 : Making Friends
Sadie -
Your mom had to go somewhere this morning so your friend Maren came over to hang out with you. Maren and her husband don't have kids yet, so Maren is not used to hearing babies cry. Your mom warned her that you would be vocal when she laid you down for a nap, but Maren still wasn't prepared for the boisterous protest you raised when she put you in your crib. She was so shaken up, she called her husband who had to reassure her that you were fine and she didn't do anything wrong. You just really don't like taking naps.
That's okay - neither do I! Your mom will often tease me about the fact that I get mad at her when she suggests that I should nap. I am always afraid that if I go to sleep I'll miss out on doing something cool. Is that why you don't like them?

Day 98 : Kickin' It
Sadie -
You, your mom, and I went to have dinner with our friends Kiffen and Christy and their kids, Luke and Kayla, tonight.
Luke and Kayle think you are so cool! They are 11 and 9 and are about to have a little sister of their own. They are practicing how to be good siblings with you.
Kayla kept watching you while you slept and gave us a full report every time you flinched or stretched.
During dinner you were a little uncomfortable so I let you lay in my lap and kick and relax. You seemed to be content as long as you knew you had me close. I like that!

Day 97 : YouSpace
Sades -
In the last few days, your mom has taken some time to add a little flair to your room. We discovered some shelves we had forgotten about and shoved in a closet. We got them out to create a makeshift card table earlier this week, but when mom went to put them back in the closet, she realized your room could use some new space.
You now have a book and toy shelf in your room that really adds to the feeling that you are quickly becoming more than a little baby - you are my little girl!

Day 96 : PJs
Sadie -
You have some PJs with hearts on them that I love to put you in after your bath. Your mom and I think they make you look like a big girl - and I am pretty sure they make you EXTRA huggable.
I love it when I have to get you out of the crib when you haven't quite finished sleeping and you fall onto my shoulder and burrow into my neck for warmth and comfort.
I enjoy every day with you more.

Day 95 : Precious
Sadie -
I always thought that I would have no trouble loving you, but I am still surprised at the amount of love I have overflowing for you.
I told your mom tonight that I used to hold your cousin Jasmine and "cousin" Ivy and wonder at how much I cared about them even though they weren't mine.
Now, I hold you, and those feelings towards others can not even compare with the intensity with which I care for you.
The love of a parent truly is something you can't understand until you are one!
Like I tell you each evening before I lay you down to sleep:
"I love you more than you'll ever imagine..."

Day 94 : Growing Fast!
Sadie -
As weird as this may sound, it seems the girl I put back in her crib after feeding this morning and the girl I came home to this afternoon are two different kids!
I mean this, of course, in the best of ways, but your mom agrees - today has been a developmental milestone.
First, you've really started to follow with your eyes and communicate with your glance. When I walked through the door this evening, you made it very clear with body language that you were excited about my arrival and wanted to spend time with me.
Second, you ate more rice tonight than you have yet. The doctor acted as if the transitioning to eating solids would take weeks and weeks. You have adapted proficiently.
Third, you are really starting to talk in your own baby way. Your mom changed your diaper tonight and got you so excited that I could hear you cooing across the house. It is so neat to hear you developing your own voice.
I am excited about all this progress, but already get a little misty thinking about how fast it is all happening. Mom pulled out old video and pictures of you from your first week home today and you look so much different already!
I love watching you grow!

Day 93 : Good Rice, Bad Rice
Sadie -
Mom has been teaching you to eat rice pudding for the last few nights. This is your first step in learning to eat like a grown-up. Tonight, I got to try feeding you. Mom was impressed! This evening was the first time you've eaten your whole serving!
I love watching and helping you try new things. I think we make a good team!

Day 92 : Nappin'
Sadie -
I had the day off from work so we took it easy together today.
You, your mom and I went over to Aunt Amy's place today so that we could borrow some of your cousin Jasmine's old clothes. You are growing so fast, we are already having to find you clothes in the next size up.
While your mom and aunt were going through crates of clothing, you were sleeping in the next room. I went in to check on you and the next thing I know, your mom is waking me up! I slept next to you for the better part of an hour. You are a good napping buddy!

Day 91 : Future You
Sadie -
You gave me another half-giggle today. Your mom wasn't around and is now very jealous. It was somewhere between putting you on the changing table this afternoon and singing you Jackson Browne songs that you burst into a big smile with a slight vocal accompaniment.
I already worry about you so much. Sometimes while I feed you, especially when you are eating late at night, I'll look and think about the different parts of your body - your arms, legs, eyes, ears, heart, lungs, etc. - and offer up a little prayer for each. I pray that God will protect you and help you grow correctly, and that you will grow up to love and serve Him.

Day 90 : Friends and Family
Sades -
You got to spend a lot of today with your friends!
Your "Uncle" Jeff came in to town and went out to lunch with us at our new favorite place to eat, Joe's Older Than Dirt. You had a lot of fun smiling and giggling at me while I grubbed on a cheeseburger.
After lunch, you hung out with your cousin Jasmine and your Aunt Amy while your mom and I went to see a movie and went to a birthday get-together. We got home this evening just in time for me to hug on you and put you to bed.
It was hard for mom and I to be apart from you for so long today. I thought a lot this afternoon about how much I hate not being able to protect you every single second. I know that part of being a good parent will be teaching you how to be a responsible human being and how to make good decisions. But right now I just want to be your protector and keeper!
I love you sooooooo much! (Are you tired of hearing that yet?)

Day 89 : Braggin' Rights
Sadie -
I went back to work like normal today. Mom was feeling a little better and could take care of you.
I missed you even more than normal today. A few folks at work asked how you were and all I could do was brag about how great being a dad is and how good you were when your mom didn't feel good yesterday!
Don't misunderstand, though. Even if you were grumpy all the time, I'd still love you more than you could imagine.

Day 88 : Clockwork
Sades -
Your mom wasn't feeling good today. She had such a bad headache she could barely stand up. I stayed and worked from home so I could take care of you, and what a good day we had!
You were so well-behaved! Your mom was amazed at how well you napped and acted for me all day long. I told her that you were just sorry she was sick and were trying to do what you could to make her feel better!
You cooperated and stayed on your schedule so well, I was amazed at how much work I was actually able to get done from home!
Thanks for being a team player and such a good kid!

Day 87 : Hear Ye, Hear Ye
Sadie -
You were so good at the doctor's office today! I think the whole process was a whole lot harder on your mom and me than it was on you. You slept on the way to the hospital and for most of the time we were in the waiting room. Some med students "exfoliated" your face with some good-smelling soap stuff to get your skin ready for the wires they use to monitor your brain waves. Then the nurses gave you some special medicine that helped you go to sleep.
Your results were "beautiful," according to the doctor. You came back home with mom and spent most of the day just sleeping or being very quiet. You should be back to %100 tomorrow.
Thanks for being so well-behaved!

Day 86 : Nerves
Sadie -
Mom and I are a little on edge tonight. We are nervous about a doctor's appointment you have tomorrow morning. Because you were in the special hospital after you were born, the state of Kentucky wants your hearing to be checked every few months for a few years. This is okay, but for the test tomorrow, you are going to be sedated and you can't eat for four hours before the test begins.
Not eating makes everybody - but especially you - grumpy!
Your "Uncle" Lafe had these words of encouragement for me when I shared my concern:
"It is only one day. You'll get through it."
Good luck! I love you!

Day 85 : Wrestle-mania
Oh Sadie -
You've been feeling bad again today. Mom said you've been grumpy and have just wanted to be held. When I got home tonight, I did just that: I held you.
After you ate dinner, I played with you on the floor and spent some time trying to teach you how to roll over. It ended up just being a bit of a wrestling match, but it was a lot of fun!
I hate seeing you not feeling good!
I hope you feel great tomorrow.

Day 84 : Under the Weather
Sadie -
You have been feeling yucky today. Mom has had a little bit of a bug for the last few days and we think you might have caught it now.
You are grumpy and are having trouble sleeping. Tonight when I was feeding you, you were even having trouble keeping your food down.
It is so hard for me to see you not feeling good. I just want to cuddle you and tell you it will be all right. And it will be... you just might not feel so good for awhile...
I now understand what it means when parents say,"This will hurt you more than it hurts me."
I love you. Hopefully tomorrow will be a better day.

Day 83 : Bag of Tricks
Sadie -
You got to visit Red Lobster for the first time tonight. This is one of your mom's favorite restaurants and it was full of people this evening. We waited for a table for over half an hour and you were getting hungry. A little girl who was probably two or three kept coming over to look at you in your car seat. When it was time to feed you, I took you out of the seat and handed you to mom who was sitting down a few steps away. I turned back and put your diaper bag into your seat, only to look up and see the small girl who had been watching you, staring at me with a look of horror on her face. Her grandmother smiled when she realized what her granddaughter was thinking and then reached down and patted her, encouraging her to look over a few seats to where you and mom were. She thought I had stuck that heavy diaper bag on top of you! I smiled and reassured her that you were okay!
I can imagine that soon will be the day that you will be just as inquisitive about things!

Day 82 : Blue Jean Baby
Sadie -
Tonight your mom put you in a baby jean jacket before we left the house. You looked so cute in your denim!
We ate a chili supper at your Grandma's house and after dinner, mom laid you down in a crib in Grandma's guest room. You got kind of quiet, but when mom went back to check on you, you were pumping your hands and feet in the air like you were riding a bike.
It is so funny how hard you fight sleep!

Day 81 : Honor Your Father...
Sadie -
I watched a movie this week that, in a particular segment, lampooned how kids treat their parents after their first year of college.
This scene was supposed to be funny - and it was in some ways. But, as is often said, the truth can hurt. I know that as a late teen I often thought my ideas were better than those handed down to me by anyone - especially my parents. I have since learned that, frankly, I was a bit of an idiot when I was 18. But just because I know this now, doesn't make it any easier to accept that one day you might have to learn this, too, by arguing and disagreeing with the ways that I try to teach you.
I realize you aren't even three months old yet, and it might be kind of silly to already worry about this. But when I am feeding you, holding your tiny body close to mine, I can't help but cringe with the thought that I won't always be able to help you in such a simple but intense way. There will come a day (probably all too soon) on which you will have to learn some lessons yourself.
I just hope I can equip you to make the right decision when that happens.
I love you more than you can imagine.

Day 80 : Fly in the Sky
Sadie -
You got to take your first trip to the airport tonight. You, your mom, and I went to Louisville International to pick up your Great Grandma Opal who has been visiting family in Colorado for the last month.
When your Great Grandma saw you, she could only comment on how much you've grown in the time she has been gone.
Your mom told you tonight that she hopes sometime soon you can see the airport as a passenger, not just on a pick-up. She wants to go back and take you to see friends in Arkansas that you haven't met yet!
I love you!

Day 79 : Head to Toe
Sadie -
You were grumpy tonight and I could not figure out how to help you relax. I moved you around the room, held you, put you down. You kept crying. Then I put on Lisa Lisa and the Cult Jam. You suddenly were quiet as I sang:
"Oooh, Sadie I think I love you..."
You have been sleeping less during the day and more at night. You sleep so hard sometimes that I will wake up in the middle of the night, sneak into your room, and lean over your crib, just to be reassured by your breathing. It is so comforting to watch you sleep so soundly!

You and I ran errands tonight. It was so fun. I thought you would fall asleep in the car, but you were determined to stay awake. I bought you some formula and as I was paying for it, you started to cry a little.
I said to you, "You know what I am buying for you, huh?" The kid at the cash register thought it was pretty funny!
I love hanging out with yoU!

Day 77 : Friends and Monkeys
Sadie -
This weekend has been full of friends. Today you got to meet your "Aunt" Jen and "Uncle" Lafe. They are visiting from Arkansas. You have been a little fussy and gassy today, but you made sure to show your new friends some smiles while they were here.
I got you ready for bath time tonight and while we were waiting for mom to run your bathwater, I held you up against my chest and you hung closely and quietly to me. I told your mom that when you hang on me like that you remind me of a cute little monkey. I am so glad you feel so secure with me. I hope I can always provide that for you!

Day 76 : Popular
Sadie -
You spent some quality time with your grandma this afternoon while your mom and I went out to grab an early dinner with some friends from my office. You are so popular that your Aunt Amy made special arrangements so that she could stop by and see you for awhile. When your mom and I got home tonight, Aunt Amy was changing your diaper and playing with you and your grandma was getting everything ready to feed you. You are so loved that people go out of their way to spend time with you. You haven't done anything to deserve this - people just care that much about you. It is humbling to hear that, huh? You can never understand that kind of love until you have a child of your own.

Day 75 : Best Medicine
Sadie -
Mom said she caught you close to laughter today! She was so excited and I am jealous. I can't imagine how fun it will be to hear you laugh. I hope you think I am funny (or at least funny looking!) so you'll laugh a lot.
Speaking of fun and funny people, your "Uncle" Tim came into town this evening and has spent some time smiling at and holding you. He really likes you.
I can't say I blame him...
LOVE YA!

Day 74 : Singin (until you throw up)
Sades -
When I got home from work this evening your mom went to grab some food and run an errand. I got out my guitar and you and I had a sing-along. You were really enjoying the music, cooing and smiling as I sang to you. You'd even kick your feet and swing your arms. We were having so much fun, I half expected to suddenly hear you doing harmony parts. Instead, I looked down at you after a few rousing choruses and found you spitting up all over your clothes!
Sorry! I won't make you try to hit the high notes next time we jam!

Day 73 : Head and Shoulders...
Sades -
After your bath tonight, mom took a bunch of pictures of you wrapped up in your towel and lounging around on pillows. We take SO many pictures of you. I hope you are not annoyed by this when you are older, but we figure that we can always get rid of pictures we don't need, but we can never recreate the ones we didn't shoot.
You are learning how to use your arms and legs more and more each day and it is really fun to watch. The other day you actually wrapped your arm around mine so I wouldn't pull the bottle away. It was funny!
Everyday is something new and exciting! You are a special gift.

Day 72 : New Things
Sadie -
Happy New Year!
Not only is today the first day of a new year, it is also the first time it has really snowed here in the city since you have been alive. It is pretty outside but very cold!
As I type this, you are wearing a shirt that says "daddy loves me" and you are sitting up like a big girl in your special chair right next to me.
Hey, stop reading over my shoulder! (Ha ha!)
I love kickin' it with you!
