Day 367 : Barrel of Laughs

Sadie -

A few fun moments with you today:

1. Tonight at dinner you grabbed your milk cup, swung your head back, and let out a muffled "yuummmmm" as you slurped the coldness down.

2. Later, you were hanging in my arms. Mom was across the table and asked "Who is that?" as she pointed at me. You stuck your finger out to point at me and then pronounced, "DAaadaada!"
I smothered you in kisses!

3. I was putting socks on you before bed. Mom leaned over and you pulled your finger out of your mouth and stuck it in hers. You repeated this process several times.

You are such a blast!

Day 366 : Boys and Cats

Sadie -

Tonight we went over to have dinner with my friend Keith from work and his wife Sarah. They have a little boy who is almost exactly 6 months younger than you (meaning that for right now, he is half your age!)His name is Henry and you guys were both fascinated by each other when you met. He kept grabbing your shirt while you were busy trying to steal his teething ring.

Henry's family also has a house cat, something you have never been exposed to before. This made you uncomfortable. You held tightly to any part of me you could find (usually the leg of my pants) whenever the cat came near.

It is all right. Your mom is allergic to cats so we won't ever own one!

Day 365 : It's Your Party...

Sadie -

The big party Mom and I have been excited about for weeks was today!

After your afternoon nap (which you really didn't want to take... you must have known we had something special up our sleeves!), the three of us went to beautiful Brown Park, just a few neighborhoods away, and were met by your Aunt Amy, Cousins Jasmine and Josh, Great Grandma Gee, Dee Dee, Pops, and Uncle Joel.

We played on the playground for awhile. Your Grandpa (Pops) and I were having fun pushing you on the "zip line." It is designed for much older kids, but you were loving just holding on to it tightly and letting us push you.

After we played, we opened gifts. You sat between my legs while Cousin Jasmine brought wrapped-up boxes and gift bags full of surprises for you to demolish. You got a LOT of stuff - a shape sorter from your cousins and Aunt, blocks from your Uncle. You got sweatsuits and a book from Grandma and Grandpa and a special plate from your Great Grandma - not to mention all of the cool stuff Mom and I got for you. We didn't give you the lego blocks today, though. You can open those on Wednesday!

For dinner we ate vegtable soup. Then came the cake and ice cream. You had never seen these items before. You examined them both, then picked up a whole glob of the cold ice cream and shoved it on to your face and into your mouth. It was HILARIOUS!

Today was awesome!

Day 364 : School Trips

Sadie -

Usually mom takes you to school, but once every couple of weeks, for some reason or another, I will take you. It is extra driving for me, but I really love the extra time I get to spend with you.

Tonight after school, I picked you up and we met your mom at our favorite pizza place in our neighborhood. You were really tired, but had enough energy to scarf some peporoni down. As usually happens when we are at this restaurant, we met another family with a little girl. You waved and smiled lots. You have always been good at helping me meet new people (just because folks want to talk about how blue your eyes are or how cute you are), but now you are starting to enjoy the new-people-process yourself - especially if they have kids!

Day 363 : Super Secret Shopping Trip

Sades -

When you went to sleep tonight, your Uncle Joel came over and stayed with you so your mom and I could sneak out for a bit. We are throwing a small family birthday party for you on Saturday and wanted to go together to get you gifts. We wandered the aisles through several stores, picking things, putting them down, discussing and debating. On our third store we found you Lego blocks, a train that matches the toy truck your friend Lori got for you, and a purple stuffed kangaroo that I found and am sure you will like. Mom already got you some wooden puzzles she found a few weeks ago.

When we got home, we hid your presents upstairs, even though you wouldn't really know what they were if you saw them. We are just so excited about this big event and we want to show you how much we love you!

Day 362 : Eichen Jr. Burger

Sades -

Mom went out to dinner with some work friends tonight, so you and I had another D3 (Daddy Daughter Date).

We went to Sonic and I ordered you your own jr. burger. You looked at it kind of funny at first, not sure of what to make of the fluffy bread smashed on top of meat with yellow sauce (mustard!), but a few delicate bites in and you were sold! You ate quote a lot of your sandwich (as usual!)

We ate at a park really close to our neighborhood that we had never been to before. It was really nice and well-landscaped. There were no swings your size, though, so we spent our after-dinner time walking the trail around the park. There were lots of folks exercising and many stopped to say "hi" to you, or at least grin while they passed.

Near the end of the trail I started running while pushing your stroller. You seemed to enjoy the high speed chase!

Day 361 : Happy to See You

Sadie -

I sometimes get so excited about seeing you after a long day apart that I find myself a little disappointed when you don't seem all that excited to see me.

So this afternoon it was quite refreshing to have you literally fall over with excitement when I walked through the door after work.

You were playing on the floor and when you saw me you smiled big, started jiber-jabbering and blowing me kisses and then tried crawling towards me. You were so pumped, you slipped on your way over because you were just trying to move too fast.

You were in a great mood all evening and had plenty of hugs and kisses for your mom and me.

We love everyday with you more.

Day 360 : Family Bumper Cars

Sadie -

Tonight, you and your mom and I were ready to eat, but dinner wasn't quite finished cooking. We snacked on some crackers and waited, but it still needed time to finish. So I pulled you out of your chair and the three of us invented a new game.

It is played like this:

1. You and I go stand at the far end of the hallway and walk towards the kitchen.
2. Mom is in the kitchen and begins walking down the hallway, pretending that she doesn't see us.
3. The three of us collide while Mom and I make loud fake crashing noise and watch you giggle loudly.

Just wait until you get to try real bumper cars, kiddo!

Day 359 : Toe Jam

Sadie -

Did I mention that we got you a new car seat this weekend? Well, actually it used to be your Cousin Jasmine's, but it is new to you and very necessary because of how long you are becoming.

I went to see a car seat expert on Friday afternoon to make sure this new seat was installed just right. We moved it to the opposite side of the car from where the other one used to sit, so now when I am driving you are off to my right instead of back behind me. The new chair has taken a little getting used to, but you seem to be enjoying it.

This afternoon, you and your mom and I were coming back from the store when I turned around to check on you. You had you foot literally in your mouth. I guess you have enough room and flexibility in this new chair...

Day 358 : What up, Cuz?

Sadie -

Today brought some really cool news. My best friend Chris, your "Uncle" Charlie, is now a dad, too!

No, you haven't met "Uncle" Charlie or "Aunt" Elisa, or your new "Cousin" Samantha yet, but hopefully you will soon. They ask after you often and look at pictures of you all the time. They live in Little Rock, Arkansas for now, but we hope one day all of us will live closer together and you can Samantha can get to be good friends.

It is funny to think about you having friends. Mom and I have noticed how much you like being out and about and around people and how you seem to prefer to not be cooped up in the house. I speculate that you might be quite the little socialite as you grow. That would be okay. Just make sure to come home and say "hi" quite a lot!

Day 357 : More Monkey Business

Sadie -

You have a new morning routine that involves reading your pop-up Bible with Mom. As soon as you wipe the sleep out of your eyes and realize you are out of the crib, you lean and point towards your bookshelf and say, "book." Mom retrieves your request and the two of you settle into your small couch for a few minutes of page flipping.

One of the first pages in your book has a flap you pull up to reveal a monkey. Whenever you pull this flap up, Mom always makes a monkey noise like, "Ooh Ooh, Ahh Ahh." You think this is hilarious, and evidently you also think it is worth imitating. Now when mom says "Ooh Ooh, Ahh Ahh" to you at any random moment during the day (like at the park during our family picnic and swinging time tonight), you go, "Ah Ah!" back at her. It is really funny.

I have always called you "my little monkey"!

Day 356 : Incisors

Sades -

Many kids approaching their first birthday are starting to get their first teeth. You are starting to get your final teeth.

You've been wearing some major "grumpy pants" for the last few days, so mom checked your mouth to see if you could, in fact, be getting more teeth. Sure enough! And it looks like you are getting all four of these at once.

I told your mom today that my incisor teeth hurt if I touch them wrong - I can't imagine how much they would hurt breaking through my gums.

I love you and will try to be extra-sensitive to you over the next few days!

- Dad

Day 355 : Laugh Track

Sadie -

Mom's garraunteed ways to make you laugh:

1) Mom grabs your feet or your sock, puts it to her nose and pretends that it smells bad. She lets out a huge, over-dramatic "SHOO-WEE!"; you crack up in a hysterical fit of giggles.

2) You are on the changing table waiting for a fresh diaper and PJs. Mom appears wearing your night-night blanket over her head. She comes towards you and drapes it over you. You crack up in a hysterical fit of giggles.

3) You are in your car seat, ready to go to school. Mom appears with your car blanket and fans it onto your lap. When it settles, she grabs it away quickly and repeats the process. You crack up in a hysterical fit of giggles.

Day 354 : So(da) What?

Sades -

You have become quite the inquisitive explorer. We knew that once you got a handle on crawling you'd be into everything - and you are. But for the most part, you are learning to listen when your mom and I tell you that something is "not for you."

The last few nights I've cracked open a bottle of orange soda for myself to drink with dinner. Whenever you see the little bottle you get very excited, pointing and asking me to see it. I tell you that you are allowed to touch and thus explore the bottle, but you are not allowed to taste it. This arrangement is not really to your satisfaction, though, and I have had to end up hiding from you everytime I have needed a sip with the meal!

I will tell you that soda is quite the treat. You will probably notice as you grow that I drink quite a lot of those carbonated beverages. But you won't taste one for awhile.

I actually met a guy recently who told me he still doesn't drink any sodas as an adult because when he was young he kept trying to drink his mother's soda. She finally let him take a sip, and not anticipating the carbonation, he took such a big gulp it burned his throat and to this day he can barely go back to the beverage.

I wouldn't want that to happen to you...

- Dad

Day 353 : Yo, Gurt!

Sadie -

So this past weekend, your mom and I started giving you "real" milk instead of formula to drink with your meals. This not only makes life a little easier, it also allows you access to other things that heavily involve the use of "real" (read: cow's) milk: like yogurt!

Mom gave you a bite of her yogurt yesterday and you got excited. You couldn't get enough! You ate half of her cannister before she even got a bite. This morning I gave you some yogurt for breakfast and you laughed with glee and excitement after each bite.

I just keep saying: "Wait 'till you try ice cream (again...), toots!"

Day 352 : Under the Influence

Sades -

This morning, I was sitting on the couch while you played with your toys on the living room floor. You found a rag in your basket of fun and turned to hand it up to me. I tried to take it from you and you pulled it back and burst into laughter.

You were teasing me!

I told your mom about our interaction when she got up.

"Where did she learn that?" I asked in disbelief.

"Oh... I know where..." answered your mom.

It turns out that while "Aunt" Danielle was here yesterday, she got you into that game by doing the same trick to you. You were so impressed, I guess you had to try it out for yourself.

I can't believe your senses and learning are already so acute! You are amazing...

Day 351 : SUSHI

Sadie -

Your mom and I and your "Uncle" Ben, "Aunt" Danielle and "Uncle" Lafe and "Aunt" Jen are all going to a big orchestra concert tonight.

Before the show, all of us - you included - went to Ichiban for some good Japanese eating. You made quick friends with the waitress and you and your mom and I all shared some chicken fried rice. Then you and I split some cucumber roll sushi. You loved it! I am so glad that you like trying new things.

One day, when you are quite a bit older, we'll try some more advanced sushi - you know, with salmon, tuna or shrimp. But for the time being, I am more than happy to eat veggie sushi with you any day of the week!

Day 350 : Day on the Farm

Sadie -

What a fun day!

Mom's work had a special family outing planned this afternoon, so I took a half-day at the office and joined you two in going to an orchard up in Indiana called Huber's. We met a lot of Mom's work friends and ate a big lunch of potatos and beans and chicken. Then the really cool stuff began!

First, we went on a tractor ride to feed some goats. You were less afraid of the hungry creatures than I was (though your real interest was in their food; you really wanted to try the dry pieces of corn, but mom and I let you know that wasn't a good idea.)

After visiting the goats, we took another tractor ride to a corn maze. We walked through row after row of corn that was taller than all of us. You liked playing with pieces of husk and rolling around in my arms.

We walked over to the nearby pumpkin patch and let you choose your own pumpkin. Mom is going to help you decorate it later this month.

Today wore all of us out. You napped on the way home and still went to bed earlier than usual because you were so beat.

Family outings are a blast!

Day 349 : Guzzle Guzzle

Sadie -

You and your mom and I returned to our weekly tradition this week : We went to Buffalo Wild Wings for boneless chicken wings.

While we waited on our food you were getting a bit anxious. Mom handed you your sippy cup of milk. You took a swig, then you handed it over to me like you wanted to share. I grabbed and lifted it to my lips and leaned my head back like I was taking a big sip. I made a funny noise like I was really downing your drink.

You cracked up into a fit of laughter. Suddenly we had found a new game...

You would take a sip, hand it to me. I would pretend to pour it down my throat, then hand it to mom. We did this for several minutes until we were all laughing ridiculously.

You are more fun to be around every day!

- Dad

Day 348 : Tango

Sadie -

This morning, you and I got ready for work and school and were waiting around for your mom. She was in the bathroom doing her make-up, so I, with you in my arms, started prancing up and down the hallway to get her attention. This quickly turned into me getting cheek to cheek with you and holding you arm out with mine, then taking two distinct steps at a time - a loose interpretation of a dance called "tango." Not only did mom find this funny, you thought it pretty hilarious - a big grin stayed on your face and you wouldn't even shift your head away from our cheek-to-cheek stance.

This afternoon, I walked into Dee Dee's (we were invited for dinner) and got two big declarations from your mom.

1) You had been huggin your Cousin Jasmine quite excitedly for the last few minutes and there were pics to prove it.

2) You fell on the hard tile at pre-school today and have a gigantic bruise above your right eyebrow.

It was hard for me to look at the bruise at first, imagining the pain that caused it. But I should probably buck up - you are going to face more than tough tile in your life, and much like today, I won't always be there to stop it.

I love you desperately.

Day 347 : Clothes-ing Up

Sadie -

Your continued tremendous growth has left us with a bit of a problem: you are too big for your clothes. Over the past few weeks, mom and I have had to put aside shirt after pants after dress that you just can't squeeze into anymore. With your birthday gifts still a few weeks away, we were starting to wonder, "What are we going to dress Sadie in?!"

Then your Aunt Amy called last night.

It seems that when your Cousin Jasmine was your size, she not only had some clothes of her own, she was given a tremendous amount of hand-me-downs. Your Uncle Steve volunteered to bring these clothes by on his way into his job. We were expecting some clothes - but he arrived with bag after box after bag of beautiful, cute, clean clothes - that most importantly were in your size!

Mom has now loaded up your shelves with all of these new outfits. You even wore one of them to school today. (It was an adorable little black and white dress! Mom said you looked British in it!)

It is great to have a generous Aunt and Cousin, huh?

Give them extra hugs next time you see them...

Day 346 : Crash(ing out)

Sadie -

I got home this afternoon a little after you and your mom and found the front screen door propped open. I was confused.

"Why is the door propped open?" I asked your mom when I found the two of you in the living room. She explained that you fell asleep on the way home from school. She thought you would wake up when you guys got in the driveway at home, but you did not. She got out of the car, went and propped the door and came back to get you. You slept while she pulled you from the seat. You slept while she brought you into the house. You even slept while she sat down with you on the couch. She ended up just letting you snooze sprawled out across her lap.

You must have had a hard day!

Day 345 : Mom Night

Sadie -

Because mom has been so busy with work recently (she had another big work event yesterday morning!), we decided tonight to make the evening a special time for her.

You and I went to the store this afternoon to get a few extra food items and then returned to the kitchen so we could prepare a special meal. Mom requested that we eat on our deck outside, so we lounged at the patio table and consumed our handi-work together!

You went to bed and I finished all the dishes and laundry for your mom.

It is always important to let Mom know how special she is to us!

Thanks for your help!

Day 344 : Wal Mart Friends

Sadie -

You and I went on a grocery run to Wal-Mart this morning. It was bright and early and there weren't many people in the store. This meant that everyone there had all the more time to pay attention to you.

We didn't even get through the front entry before a greeter found her way over to us to stroke your arm, make faces at you, and talk about how cute you are.

A random customer came over to see if I needed any extra help getting you in a cart (?! I think he just wanted to get a closer look at your cuteness) and he quickly commented that "She looks just like you!"

As we were checking out with our cart full of food, you leaned on my shoulder and caught the attention of a woman behind us who promptly began playing peek-a-boo with you.

I say it a lot these days : You make it easy to meet new people!

343 : Mom Time

Sadie -

Mom is back and you are happy about it! She has always said that you pour a little extra love my way instead of hers on most days, but today you made sure to let her know that you like having her around - and that you missed her a little while she was gone!

You handed out hugs without being asked and spent extra time snuggling.

Mom loves this but does admit that it creates a problem. Now that you are showing how much you notice when she is gone, it is going to make it a lot harder to leave.

342 : D3

Sadie -

Tonight we started what I hope will become a longstanding tradition throughout your childhood: Daddy-Daughter Dates. With mom still out of town, I picked you up from school and we went to Arby's to grab a sandwich. We then went to the pretty park near our house and got on the swings. You LOVE swinging so much!

We met a little girl who was around your Cousin Jasmine's age and just as inquisitive. She thought you were really neat and asked me lots of questions about you - what you liked, how you talked, etc.

I love hanging out with my Sades!

Day 341 : Lasagna with Dee Dee

Sadie -

Your mom has another business trip this week, so it is just you and me again for a couple of days. (For the record: Mom isn't usually away on business so much. She has just had a busy month. And she really doesn't like being away from you AT ALL!)

Your Dee Dee called and asked us to come over for a lasagna dinner. It is always fun to feed you lasagna for two reasons:

1) You love it!
2) It requires you to practice (what I call) "full-immersion eating"

This just means you end up with food all over you by the end of the meal. You did this last night with the dish mom made and you did it tonight with lasagna. Sometimes I don't even put clothes on you before a meal like this.

You got so much lasagna on you that I put you in the bathtub over at your Grandma's house immediately after dinner. We scrubbed you down and got you all good-smelling again. Then I noticed on the way to the car that your face was still streaked with a faint red stain of tomato sauce!

I am glad you love to eat so much!

Day 340 : Real Long Distance

Sadie -

I mentioned yesterday that you have games to play with me - but your favorite game has to be the one you and mom have cooked up. We call it "Long-Distance Kiss."

It works like this:

1. I hold you in my arms on one end of the room. Mom stands on the other.
2. She asks you for a kiss. You look at her sheepishly.
3. Mom now starts running at us from the far end of the room. You pretend to hide in my shoulder or you smile and giggle in anticipation.
4. Mom grabs your face and plants one on.

We play through these steps at least 5 or 6 times a day... and it is usually you that makes us stop!

- Dad

Day 339 : Attack of the Sades!

Sadie -

Now that you are mobile (aka crawling) you have become even more entertaining.

Tonight after dinner, your mom and I were lounging in the living room with you while you played with your toys. I sprawled out on the floor near you, laying on my side, and turned my attention towards the TV. I suddenly heard you giggling and moving. I turned my head and twisted my torso just in time to see you lunge at me.

It seems you've created a new game. If I am on the floor with you, I act like I am not paying attention. You then come crawling as quickly as you can, and throw your body at me. It is especially fun because you get really worked up with anticipation to the point that you are already laughing at yourself before you even get to me.

I like playing games with you!

Day 338 : Your Michael

Sadie -

Remember how I mentioned that you really enjoy being around our friend Michael?

He and his wife Maren came over for pizza tonight and you spent most of your meal flirting and smiling at one or both of them. You have started this funny thing where you tilt your head and stretch your face into a huge grin when you have someone's attention who you are trying to impress. We were all getting tickled watching you work your magic on Michael and Maren tonight...

Day 337 : Gaslight Fun

Sadie -

As the summer turns to fall, now is the time for "town festivals." These are basically family-friendly street parties that include crafting booths and overpriced lemonade - and your mom and I love going to them!

This afternoon, the three of us met up with your "Aunt" Danielle and "Uncle" Ben at one of these festivals called the Gaslight Festival. We walked through closed-down streets among crowds of people pushing their way past booths full of trinkets, woodworking and t-shirts. You stayed in your stroller for awhile, then I got you out and let you laze in my arms for awhile. You were quite the monkey, flopping around in my grip and stretching out at funny angles. Many complete strangers stopped to comment on how cute you are - so many in fact, that "Uncle" Ben jokingly suggested that we get a booth at this festival next year and just charge people a few bucks to look at you.

Not a bad idea...

Day 336 : Pizza Pals

Sadie -

In the spirit of Friday night, you and your mom and I went to a pizza place by our new house for dinner. We'd never been there before and we found it moderately crowded. After we sat down, another family came in - they had two little girls and a new little boy. They were very friendly and all talked to you and asked us about you.

People always comment about your beautiful blue eyes - how big and pretty they are. I like to think I had something to do with you getting those... I also often imagine how they will look when you have a full head of hair (especially if it is dark hair.) I often tell your mom that I am going to have to hide you away when you get older and boys your own age start to notice how pretty you are...

Day 335 : Day for a Parade

Sadie -

I had to work late tonight because there was a big concert in town. I talked to your mom a few times and checked on you. She said that you two went to the parade over in J-Town. You seemed to enjoy just lounging on your mom and watching the commotion go by.

While I was working, one of my bosses caught a glimpse of the screen saver on my phone and asked about you. I showed him a few pictures and he was quite impressed. It made me miss you more.

Day 334 : Back in (non)Black

Hey Sadie -

Guess what!

We got electricity restored today! Your mom drove by our house to check at the beginning of her lunch break today. Nothing.

She went and got a sandwich and drove back by later... PRESTO! She said all lights and all TVs were blaring!

Your Aunt Amy made us dinner at her house this evening. It was originally for in case we didn't have power, but we turned it into a celebration of all of us having power restored (except for your Great Grandma... Her neighbors have it back, but she doesn't!)

Day 333 : Another Dark Day

Sades -

There is still no electricity in our house... Some of our friends have gotten it back (including your grandma and grandpa), but the official stance of local government is that it could take up to two weeks to be restored in some parts of the city... Let's hope that doesn't mean us!

You have adjusted to the lack of power. Last night you slept fine. An added bonus of no electricity: sleeping in! There is no point in getting out of bed when we can't see anything, so we have all gotten a little extra shut-eye recently.

Tonight, in spite of the local conditions, mom had to work a little late. You and I met up with your grandpa and great grandma for dinner. You had a blast talking and laughing with those two. They really enjoyed getting to have you mostly to themselves.

We both took baths at Grandpa's (since we have an ELECTRIC hot water heater!) and then headed home for some shut-eye.

Let's cross our fingers and hope we get to watch some TV tomorrow!

Day 332 : Weathering the Weather

Sadie -

With no electricity in our house, it is REALLY quite at night. I think you find it a little disconcerting... You woke up in the middle of the night last night a little freaked out, so I pulled out the little sleeper couch (that we got from your "Cousin" Ivy's mom and dad) in your room and we cuddled up together.

You were a little restless, but seemed to sleep well as long as I was next to you.

I am glad I can be so comforting.

Since the power is out, your school isn't opened. I stayed home from work with you this morning and then your Grandpa came and got you and took you to his house this afternoon. He said you and he and Grandma had a good time together - and you ate a WHOLE banana for snack!

Mom and I came over to Grandma's house after work and we all ate together again! Grandma and Grandpa want us to help them eat all of their food so nothing goes to waste!

Day 331 : Power(less)

Sadie -

While you napped this afternoon there was a big wind storm! The weather guys on TV say it was a product of the hurricane that has been down in Texas. All I know is that it was loud and powerful (it ripped some siding off of our house - just a little) - and it took our power with it!

We don't have any electricity in our house!

Grandma and Grandpa and Aunt Amy and Uncle Steve don't have electricity either, but we are still going to get together this afternoon for dinner in the semi-darkness!

Should be an interesting few days...

Day 330 : Tones of Home

Hi Sadie!

You sure have found your voice! As if it came in with your crawling, you suddenly seem proud to display your opinion - and sometimes it hurts my ears!

If you don't get your morning cup of milk fast enough, or if I take a toy from you, or if I move you around in the tub - you are not afraid to let me know of your dissatisfaction and distaste.

Mom and I are working on teaching you when such reaction is appropriate and how to use different tones of voice, but I am glad to see you asserting yourself. It is important to discover your voice! Now we'll help you learn how to use it properly!

Day 329 : Sadie Does the Dishes

Sadie -

Our new house is lacking one luxury : a dishwasher!

This means that after meals, I have to scrub the plates and bowls and pans. It hasn't been so bad recently - you've been helping.

I scoot your chair over to the sink with me and hand you different odds and ends from the table: bottle caps, cups, bowls - and you "clean" them (translation: knock them together and around and shake them in the air) for me!

We spend 20 minutes doing this sometimes, barely even saying words. Just cleaning and having fun next to each other... You are a great helper!

Day 328 : Games

Sadie -

Sades and Mom Game 1 -

Title: Catch

How to Play: Sadie has bigsoftball. She gets mom's attention and then waves bigsoftball in the air, in mom's general direction. Mom either a) takes ball or b) waits for Sadie to drop/"throw" the ball to her. Mom then takes ball and throws it back at Sades. Sadie laughs a lot! So does mom...

Day 327 : Hurry Up and Move!

Sades -

Mom got home from her trip in the middle of the afternoon today.

I picked you up from school and we started to head home to see her, but there was a lot of traffic. I called to tell her we might be a few minutes late and she got really irritated. She wanted to see you and watch you crawl and she was having a little trouble being patient!

It was hard enough to be away for almost three days. Now that she was back in town, she needed you NOW!

It worked out - we got home rather quickly considering and you had plenty of time to strut your stuff!

Day 326 : New Found Skill

Sadie -

O' Mobile One! I sent a text message to a large number of folks last night that was meant to both tease and inform. It said, "Somebody's mobile! Video is on Facebook."

Several friends were confused by this, but others jumped onto their internet connection to see you move around for themselves. Your mom, in a hotel room far away, had me send her the video in several different ways to make sure she could watch it over and over.

Tonight your grandpa and Uncle Joel came over to see you groove around. You were tired so your performance was not long - but you proved your ability.

Sleep well, little one. Life is about to get a LOT more tiring!

Day 325 : Before You Walk...

Sadie -

Mom is on another business trip this week. It is just you and me for the next few days.

Before she left, she said she didn't want to go because she was sure you would start crawling while she was away. I told her she had nothing to worry about. She has some serious feminine intuition...

I came to pick you up from school today and noticed there was a comment written in big, magic marker letters on your daily report sheet. As I got closer I could read it: "I CRAWLED TODAY!"

Mom was so upset that she missed it. I promptly brought you home and we ate. It was almost time for bed, but I had to see for myself. I put your toys on one side of the living room and you on the other. You looked around and assessed the situation for a few moments. And then you did it. You crawled.

I grabbed the camera and took footage. Then I put you to bed and spent several hours trying to get the video of your movement to your mom, all the way in another state.

Congrats. You did it!

Day 324 : What I Love About Sundays...

Sades -

On Sundays, you and I get up early. Mom stays in bed and so it is just us having Cheerios and bananas. Then we go into the living room and pull out your basket of toys. I flip on the TV and lean back on the couch. After you play for a few minutes, you look up at me and I grab you off the floor. Sometimes you sit on my lap, or next to me, or even across my chest. Sometimes we cuddle with a blanket. We watch cartoons or "SuperWHY" on PBS.

Then when you start to get sleepy, you take a nap in your crib and I sleep on the couch.
When we wake up, we go to church.

Ahh... A day of rest...

Day 323 : Smack

Sades -

I think it a product of you finding your personal coordination.

You love playing with your basket full of toys now. But the way you play - well it mostly consists of you taking two toys (usually small plastic toys) and banging them together. Then, when you notice your mom or I, you stop and reach out to us with one of the toys so we can "take a bite." Mom and I pretend to chew on the toy in your hand, you smile, and then you go back to smacking the two toys against each other.

Most fun game of all time...

Day 322 : Favorite Friends

Sadie -

You are usually reserved around people who aren't members of the family. You observe them and then, after what is usually quite some time, you might smile or wave. But rarely do you quickly get comfortable with "strangers."

There have been a few exceptions. There are a handful of people who you have always loved being around - your "favorite of our friends."

1. Brian H - Brian is a bald, square, scary-looking dude. He loves metal, shreds the guitar and has a goatee - and he is a giant teddy-bear when it comes to you. When we went to that pool party a few weeks ago, he was the only person besides me that you would tolerate. He lazed around the pool with you for quite sometime.

2. Al S - Al is not intimidating like Brian. But he does have a goatee... All he has to do is smile at you and you go into full on flirt mode!

3. Michael B - Michael has something in common with Brian, too. He is bald. We always joke that you like him because you have the same hair cut!

Day 321 : Waiting

Sadie -

We went to Buffalo Wild Wings tonight (one of our regular hang-outs/weekly routines these days).

Our waiter was a young guy who (how do I say this...) He didn't seem like the kind of guy who would care much for young kids like yourself. But (and this is important lesson to learn) you can't always judge by appearances.

The waiter not only talked to you. He made sure to go out of his way to get you the special dinner we needed for you (he wrote "for a baby" on your plate so the kitchen would give you the right food.)

As we were leaving and walking through the parking lot, I heard someone yelling out after us. I turned to see the waiter booking it out the door with the sippy-cup we had taken into the restaurant for you. I had forgotten it on the table, but he was looking out for you.

You have a lot of fans, girl!

Day 320 : Kickin'

Sadie -

You are hilarious! (I know we tell you that a lot...)

We've mentioned it before: Ever since you were little you have one consistent way of showing your excitement! You kick your feet.

This has never stopped. Even now that you laugh and yell and have several ways of displaying enthusiasm, kicking your feet is still your number one way.

Your Grandma and Grandpa still think this hilarious (and of course, so do your mom and I).

Times you kick the most:

- When you are waiting for me to hand you your bottle.
- When I walk in the room after you haven't seen me in awhile.
- When mom is playing the "long-distance" kiss game (more on that later...)

- Dad

Day 319 : Next Month

Sades -

Mom made a comment yesterday:

"Can you believe Sadie's birthday is NEXT month?!?"

She is right - I mean, obviously, your birthday is next month - but, it is hard to believe.

This past year has flown by! It has been neat in a way I didn't anticipate: I feel like everyday is a chance to get to know you better. And this chance is going to continue for a long time. This past year has been GREAT! I can't imagine how good the next year will be... and the next... and the next...

I just hope they don't all go so fast...

Day 318 : Labor Day (for reals)

Sadie -

Your mom and I kind of accidentally invited a bunch of people over for a Labor Day party. Labor Day is the first Monday in September - it's a holiday where people get to NOT labor and usually just eat and hang out with friends.

This is fine - but we JUST moved into our new house, so there really was A LOT of labor to do before people could visit.

It was all worth it, though!

Your friends Eliza and Abby came over and the three of you swam in the kiddie pool on our deck. We ate sausage and BBQ and you went to bed early because you got SO worn out by all the fun.

Happy first Labor Day!

- Dad

Day 317 : Mom Food

Sades -

There was a brunch at church this morning. I sat at the table with you while mom went to get the two of you food. She came back with a loaded plate and let you start feasting. After I returned with my plate of food, your mom turned to me with the now half-empty plate she was feeding you from and confessed : "I put nothing on this plate but stuff I thought Sadie would like; and now I don't have anything to eat. I don't want any of this." But you did. You ate well.

This is how mom lives. She is always thinking about you, not herself. When ever you are older and are mad at her remember this. She is ALL about you. Even if it might not always seem like that to you...

- Dad

Day 316 : All for One, One for Crawl

Sades -

You are SO close to crawling. You spend your playtime on the living room floor with your basket of toys and after a few minutes (and some accidental misplacement), you usually end up propped on all fours, concentrating hard and trying to figure out how to move yourself forward instead of backward.

Either your mom and I will be watching this sequence of events and will get convinced that this time you are about to find your true mobility. At this point, the one of us watching calls for the other who stops whatever he or she is doing to turn attention to you. And, like you know what is happening, you suddenly stop in your tracks and move on to something besides trying to crawl.

This happens so much it is starting to be hilarious.

Day 315 : Crashin' Out

Sadie -

Your mom and I picked you up from school tonight and attempted to start our holiday weekend by going to one of our favorite places to eat - Joe's. There was a ton of traffic, though, and you were tired. You fell asleep hard while we were driving.

When we got to the restaurant, I pulled you out of the car seat expecting you to wake up, but you were sleeping so soundly. You stayed asleep on my shoulder, napping for another 10 minutes while we got situated and ready to eat. People in the restaurant noticed you were sleeping and gave me winks and knowing looks. You are so adorable - all the time!

Day 314 : Movin' On

Sadie -

Today while you were at school, your mom and I (along with a lot of help from your Uncle Joel, Pops, Michael, Kerry, and Uncle Steve) packed up all of our stuff and moved it into a different house - a place WAY bigger than the apartment we've been living in since you were born.

We now live just a few minutes from our old place - but in a neighborhood and with a backyard and an upstairs.

After we picked you up from school, we met all the folks that helped us move at Pizza Hut for a celebratory party. You ate lots of pizza!

I am looking forward to watching you grow in this new environment. I think you'll really love it!

Day 313 : Giggly-Face

Sadie -

You are so smiley these days! You laugh at the silliest things - even coughing! When you cough it turns into a chuckle at the sound. Now when your mom or I have a catch in our throats, it becomes amusement for you. It is so weird...

A few nicknames for you based on recent behavior (and a few just because they are fun):

Giggly-face
Goofball
Goof-Troop (your mom call you that one)
Popsicle
Boogerface
Sillyface
Boogs
Sades-a-licious

- Dad

Day 312 : Rings

Sadie -

Out of all of your toys, it is the set of multi-colored plastic rings that occupies most of your time. Other trinkets you tire of quickly - but not so with these. You pull them off of their stacking center and toss them to the side. You pick them up - one in each hand - and bang them together. And now, most recently, you offer your mom and me "bites" from those delicious pieces of plastic.

You get our attentions, thrust your thin little arms up in the air and into our general directions, and wait for us to smack our lips like we've just bitten off a chunk of that yellow, orange, or blue circle.

Then you laugh!

Will you always be so easily entertained?

Day 311 : Chicken Salad Madness

Sadie -

Your mom's friend Lori had a party this weekend and ended up with lots of left over food. She brought your mom some turkey and a container of chicken salad to work this morning, so we decided to eat it for dinner tonight.

We made you a little half-sandwich so you could try this new dish. Little did we know what it would do to you... You went NUTS! You started shoving the sandwich in your mouth so fast, your mom couldn't keep up as she tried to cut up pieces for you to eat.

By the end of the meal, your faced had smashed chicken all over it - and you looked VERY happy!

- Dad

Day 310 : Bass-ics

Sadie -

I played bass guitar in the band at church this morning. You and your mom sat close to the stage where I played and she said you were mesmerized trying to figure out what I was doing.
You liked the music (like usual) and kicked your feet and hummed along.

We went to Aunt Amy's for sandwiches after lunch. You were so tired that you just lounged with your grandma (DeeDee) and waited to leave so you could nap.

You (like your mom) really like to sleep! That is good!

I just don't like that it means I see you a little less...

- Dad

Day 309 : Beach Bum

Sadie -

Your mom has been busy painting at our new house this weekend (more on that whole situation later...), so today has been mostly a "Dad & Sades" day. It's been pretty low-key; you, like your mom, prefer spending days off just lying around. You took two long naps today and I had to wake you up from both of them!

This afternoon you and I went to a pool party with some friends from church. Your friend Kane's family had some nice floating inter-tubes in the shape of some sea creature. They let you borrow one and you LOVED it! You lunged forward and sprawled out and kept propping your hand behind your head. You looked so adult! You got so relaxed, though, that you kept trying to go to sleep as you floated around the pool.

I took lots of pictures of you in your big, floppy sun hat lounging like an infant movie star on your inter-tube.

Everyday with you is a great day!

- Dad

Day 308 : (real) Raspberries

Sadie -

You know when you blow a bunch of air between your lips and it makes that funny noise you like so much? Your mom and I call that a "raspberry." But a raspberry is actually a fruit - my favorite fruit, in fact. Your mom can't eat them because she is allergic (once, before you were born, she and I made smoothies with raspberries and she got big scary bumps all over her body...), but I could eat them everyday if I could afford the habit.

Your grandma (Dee Dee) was in the grocery this week and saw a big unannounced sale on raspberries, so when we went over to her house for dinner tonight, she surprised me with my own pint. I put a few on your tray and you went straight for them. (You love things that are red!)

I think raspberries may soon be one of your favorites, too. You ate quite a few from my pint.

That is okay! I can't think of anyone I'd rather share them with!

- Dad

Day 307 : Straw Theory

Sadie -

We ate dinner at Buffalo Wild Wings again tonight. You scarfed some chicken (as has become your habit) and then spent some time loving on your DeeDee who went out to dinner with us. While you were sitting with your grandma, your mom offered you a drink of water through her straw. She put the straw in her water and then placed her finger over one end. She pulled the straw out, put it in your mouth, and then removed her finger, leaving the liquid in your cheeks. The water was cold and every time it hit your mouth you would grimace. Mom would make a "ooo-wee" noise and you would laugh and pant for more.

Your grandma and I got to laughing at the two of you pretty heartily!

- Dad

Day 306 : Uncle J

Sadie -

Your Uncle Joel has been out of town on and off for the last several months touring the country with his rock band Hark the Herald. I called him yesterday afternoon and found out that he was back in town. I was excited, so we all went out to dinner. Uncle Joel even came over after dinner and spent some time with you before you went to bed.

You have seemed happy to have him back. You smile at him often and enjoy hanging out in his big arms.

He loves you, too. Trust me.

Day 305 : Once Bitten

Sadie -

It has been a mild summer and one without much discomfort. That is why I was so dismayed when I woke up this morning scratching my leg and realized that I had a bunch of mosquito bites.

You and I went over to our new house with your mom yesterday as she did a chore on the property. We threw a blanket in the front yard grass and started to play when I realized that there were mosquitos everywhere. I figured they would be trying to bite on you, so I spent a lot of time making sure they didn't get near you. I guess that left my own skin wide open. So now I have itchy bumps on my legs.

That is okay. I'd rather have 100 mosquito bites than for you to have one!

Day 304 : Down with the Sickness

Sades -

You haven't been sleeping well and your mom and I have been concerned that you might be getting another ear infection, so I picked you up from school a few hours early today so we could visit the doctor.

We had to stay in the waiting room for quite awhile before the nurse called us back, but you didn't seem to mind. You bounced on my lap, practiced standing up, and even played with some toy blocks (which, of course, you wanted to put in your mouth even though they were in a germ-filled doctor's office).

Dr. A saw us a few minutes after we got back to the examination room.

Dr. A and I had to catch up before he looked at you. Your mom and I saw him from a distance at a Stone Temple Pilots concert a few nights ago and we didn't get a chance to say "hello." He said he thought he had seen us, too, but wasn't sure. He said whenever he sees a patient's family outside of the office, the child will inevitibly get sick within the next few days, and they will be in for an appointment. When he saw that you were on his schedule he knew for sure that it was your mom and I at the concert! (For the record, it was really strange to see such a professional fellow in such a casual setting as a rock concert!)

As for your sickness, he says you just have a little throat virus that has to run it's course. No ear infection!!

Mom and I are both VERY relieved!

- Dad

Day 303 : Landlord

Sades -

You and your mom and I will soon be moving. This means we have a found a new place to live. It is a little house just a few miles away, but it includes more room for you to play in and a beautiful backyard for you to explore.

This afternoon we went to meet the man who owns the house and will be letting us live there. He thought you were beautiful and more than once had to stop what he was doing to rub your head and smile at you. You seemed to like him, too. That is a good sign. I trust your judgement...

Before we met him we stopped at a park near our new neighborhood and let you swing for awhile. You loved being pushed through the air. I even put your hat on backwards for you for fun. It made for some cute pictures!

- Dad

Saturday, August 16, 2008

Day 302 : Pupupupupawooough

Sadie -

You, "Uncle" Tim, your mom, and I all went out to lunch this afternoon to a place called Mark's Feed Store. You loved the meat from Mom's sandwich and the french fries I gave you. You spent the entire 45 minutes we were in the restaurant quietly eating and enjoying yourself. You made very little noise other than the occasional murmur when you smiled at one of us to show how much you liked your lunch.

As we were walking out of the restaurant, I overheard one of the wait staff turn to another and say, "That is the most polite and cutest baby I have ever seen!"

This made me so happy! I hugged you close as we entered the parking lot, and told you how proud I was to have you as my daughter. I held you out as I finished saying this and you looked at me in the sunlight. There was a pause as I admired you.

Then you blew all the air you could muster through your lips making a loud "raspberry" sound.

"Pupupupupawoooough!!"

It was as if you were getting out all of the energy and noise you'd been storing up over the last hour.

Your mom and "Uncle" Tim and I all fell into a fit of laughter.

Day 301 : Remembering Uncle Tim

Sades -

"Uncle" Tim from Cincinnati came to town this evening to visit with us. We haven't seen him in quite sometime, and you were a little shy when he showed up. You couldn't seem to place whether or not you were supposed to like this guy. It didn't hurt his feelings or stop him from loving on you, though. Before bed, he even watched a little bit of "Miss Spider" on TV with you!

He is good friend!

- Dad

Day 300 : Chicken (bawk, bawk)

Sadie -

Tonight we went to meet our friends Michael and Maren at Buffalo Wild Wings for their 50cent boneless wing night. You enjoyed the loud, activity-filled restaurant and had plenty of energy and smiles to share with Michael and Maren.

I ordered my chicken to be smothered in a BBQ sauce, but I had the cooks leave one piece plain so you could eat it. Since you were chowing on puffs and potato and drank a bottle of milk, I thought one piece of chicken would be more than enough - WRONG!

You wolfed down your chicken and left me trying to cut mine into pieces that didn't have any sauce on them. I am so glad that you enjoy food so much!

Day 299 : Sadie the Great

Sadie -

You are quite the explorer... If I get my face too close to yours I am likely to get your fingers up my nose, in my mouth, poking my eyes... One day you'll realize how gross things can get when you are not careful as to where you put your hands, but right now you have no fear.

This fearlessness also makes it more important for mom and I to watch what falls on the floor. We tell each other almost everyday now:

"We need to vacuum..."

- Dad

Day 298 : Better Days

Hey Sadie -

We were on the verge of getting you into the doctor again due to your continuing cough and overall demeanor that betrayed your feelings of sickness - then you woke up today. Suddenly all that yuck seemed to disappear... It is amazing how fast you turn around sometimes.

Favorite foods these days:
Bananas
Pancakes
Fruit

Mom and I are already talking about how to celebrate your birthday (I can't believe it is only two months away!) She wants to make all your favorite foods... I told her we might want to make it a breakfast party!

- Dad

Day 297 : Blanket Statement

Sadie -

I am flattered that you find me to be so reassuring and secure. When you get really tired in the evening, just before bed, you become adamant that I am the only one around. Tonight, I tried to let mom put you down to sleep, but you wouldn't have it. You cried and squirmed. But as soon as I entered the room, gave you your favorite blanket and put you on my shoulder - you fell asleep so fast you literally couldn't keep your head up! It kept slipping off my shoulder because it was so heavy with sleep.

It is humbling to mean so much to you. One day you'll find out that I am not perfect and that I can't protect you from everything. But I will always do my best to provide whatever peace and security I can. I promise.

- Dad

Day 296 : Micky D's

Sadie -

Another rite of passage was reached this weekend: your first official trip to McDonald's. Most of our church friends went there after service today for lunch, so we joined them. You'd already eaten your "yum-yums," but that didn't keep you from trying a few french fries. Plus, you got to examine the Playland with your mom. She was quite proud of how long you were able to stand up and alert amidst all the commotion. Soon I won't be able to drag you out of the ball pit (or you won't be able to drag me out of the ball pit... One or the other...)

Day 295 : Something to Talk About

Sadie -

Yesterday was a gorgeous afternoon. Mom and I picked you up early from school and we went and played in the park. You met a girl named Riley who kept trying to steal your sippy cup for herself and you spent a large amount of time trying to eat 3-leafed clovers.

On the way home, the three of us were goofing off in the car. Mom was driving and when she reached a stoplight, she turned back towards your seat to talk to you. You looked up at her, waved your hand and said, "Hi!"

You were speech-full. Mom and I were speechless.

We called friends and grandmas as soon as we got home to let them know you had made your first venture into the spoked world...

- Dad

Day 294 : Isabella

Sadie -

I took you to pre-school today. We walked in the room and all your classmates were lined up in high chairs having a snack. The room was fairly quiet. As we made our entrance, your friend Isabella, sitting snug in a high chair, suddenly started making noises - at you! She was excited to see you, started saying "hi." Your teachers say you guys are friends and often sit and babble with each other. I always wonder aloud to your mother if you guys can understand one another... Is there a "baby language" you speak in?

- Dad

Day 293 : Blizzard of a Difference

Sadie -

As for your face - we called the doctor and she just told us to up your intake of the allergy meds you are already on...

Your DeeDee and Pops came over and we ordered pizza tonight. You, just like me, love pizza! We ate a lot and then went to get some ice cream at Dairy Queen. This was a special trip, though. Today, Dairy Queen is donating all proceeds from their sales of "Blizzard" treats to the Children's Miracle Network. This group is instrumental in keeping hospitals like Kosair Children's open. This hospital is the one you were at for your first two weeks of life. I called several people today and asked them to go have a Blizzard in honor of you!

Day 292 : Puff the Magic Sadie

Sades -

So we thought you were feeling better...

You went to school today. When I got home you were on the floor playing with your mom. I walked in and instantly gasped.

"What is wrong with Sadie's face?!"

Your eyes were puffy and you looked like you could not be feeling good - but you acted like nothing was wrong! You smiled big at me and waited for a hug.

Your mom said she had the same reaction when she picked you up from school, but thought she must have been over-reacting. It looks like all this congestion might just be your allergies...

We'll have to call the doctor tomorrow...

- Dad

Day 291 : Sic(sic)

Sadie -

You woke up this morning and sounded horrible. Your breathing was raspy and through your mouth only, and you had a thick cough. I'd noticed over the last few days that you were having some allergy or cold issues, but this morning they were more than full blown. Mom and I didn't want you to have to suffer through school feeling so badly so Mom took the day off. She said you slept quite a bit and wanted to be held a lot. I am the same way when I am sick!

When I got home from work, you seemed to be in okay spirits. We played some before your bed time. I hate it when you don't feel good, but you always act like it is not that big of a deal. The doctor always jokes that you have to see her from time to time because otherwise we would never know if you were sick!

I hope tomorrow is better for you!

Day 290 : Slap Bet

Sadie -

Your mom has started a new routine where we all eat meals together. One night recently you got irritated at the food on your plate and picked some up and threw it. We told you that this was not okay. You promptly picked more food up and threw it again!

Your mom slapped your hand as punishment. You stopped and let out a little cry. Then the room got quiet. Suddenly, you looked up and started blowing kisses at both your mom and I.

...Just so you know... That isn't always going to work...

Day 289 : Trippin'

Sadie -

You were such a trooper today! You and your mom and I had a lot of running around to do. We are looking for a new place to live so there has been a whole lot of riding in the car. Then tonight we went to a special party for your Pops. You haven't had a lot of traditional "fun" today, but that hasn't affected your attitude. You have been upbeat, well-behaved and a lot of fun to be around! Your mom and I just keep joking, wondering when you are going to start "misbehaving all the time like a normal kid."

I'm sure it will happen eventually (and we'll still love you just the same!), but we are loving how laid back you are now...

Day 288 : Pool (on a) Deck

Sadie -

Your DeeDee put a small inflatable pool out on her back deck under the shade of her porch. Cousin Jasmine has been at her house most of the day playing in it and there have been several phone calls made requesting your presence at the "deck pool."

Your mom and I took you over there late this afternoon and you had a blast. The water was shallow enough for you to sit up and play with toys like you do in your bath. Your Cousin thought it was cool to have you in there with her. She kept hugging you and making sure you had plenty of things to play with. We took lots of pictures of the two of you "hanging out."

Day 287 : Future You

Saders -

(NOTE: I've started calling you "Sader Tater" (which is really stupid) partly because I used to carry you over my shoulder and call you my "sack of taters." I also call you this just because it rhymes... I should never write rap songs.)

I've mentioned to your mom recently that I often wonder what you will be like when you get older - more specifically, what kind of stuff will you like? Will you like movies and music or will you like sports and hiking? Will you enjoy reading lots of books? Will you love sleepovers with friends or will you prefer sticking at home with your mom and me?

I think about how my mom and dad must have wondered all of this stuff about me when I was little. I asked them recently what it was like to have their babies grow up and have babies. Your DeeDee called it "surreal." I think being a parent in general has been kind of surreal...

Day 286 : A Brush with the Tooth

Sadie -

After the ice cream incident last night, your mom and I got a little more serious about something we've been meaning to introduce to you since you started breaking in all those teeth you have: the toothbrush!

I put some special Baby Einstein toothpaste on your Baby Einstein toothbrush (maybe these utensils will make you really smart as you grow?!?) and put it in your mouth while you played in the tub. Since you like chewing on almost anything, you didn't have much to complain about. You let me brush all through your mouth!

Now we can do something about youir morning breath! (Just kidding!... well, kind of... maybe not!)

Day 285 : You Scream, Ice Cream

Sades -

It was a moment of weakness for me. You, your mom and I and your DeeDee and Pops were all at the mall tonight and stopped by Dairy Queen for treats. We all got vanilla ice cream cones and I was holding mine when you got very interested. We all had the cones. It wasn't like I could get you away from them. So I just let you lean in and take a lick.

OH MY GOODNESS! You loved it! You loved it so much that you couldn't think about much else. If you were around any of us, you were lunging at our particular cone.

Your mom and I had always said you'd have nothing "sweet" until your first birthday party, so I was pretty dissapointed in myself for letting this happen 3 months early...

But your mom didn't mind and your DeeDee and Pops were glad they got to witness your first bite of ice cream. They said that when I your Aunt Amy was little, your Great Grandma Eich gave her ice cream when they weren't around and they'd always wished they had gotten to be a part of that moment.

Hope this helped!...

Love ya so much!

Day 284 : Us

Sadie -

Your mom had to work late tonight, so we had a "Sades & Dad Hangout Night." We shared some leftover lasagna for dinner and we were going to go to the pool after dinner, but when I couldn't find your swimsuit we ran out of time. Instead, you just played with your toys while wearing only a diaper. You kept offering me a bite of your plastic rings. They were delicious!

After some bath fun, you went right to bed without any trouble. It was a fun evening!
I love having your mom around, but it is cool to have you to myself every once in awhile!

Day 283 : Wave on Wave

Sades -

Yesterday it was the wave pool - today it was just the wave...

Your Grandma says that at your age "they do something new everyday!" She is not far off. Grandpa was in the kitchen and started waving at you tonight while you were eating at the dinner table. You didn't miss a beat. You waved right back - which came as a bit of a shock to all of us...

Are you going to talk in full sentences tomorrow? If so, please give a little warning - you talking like a grown-up is liable to freak me out a bit!

Day 282 : Stand up and clap your hands!

Sadie -

We went to Six Flags this afternoon to let you play in the water again. You were infatuated with the lazy river (just like last time), and you had no fear of the aqua-current emanating out of the large wave pool.

Mom held your hands as you sat in the edge of the wave pool and you immediately pulled yourself up into a standing position! As if that was not enough developmental excitement for one day, when one of us would hold you up and let you stand in the water, you would clap your hands out of excitement whenever a wave came near...

You sure are growing up... Must be something about the water park that brings it out of you... Are you trying to grow so you can be tall enough to ride the roller coasters with me?

Day 281 : Favorite People

Sadie -

You are generally slow to "warm up" to new people or people that you don't see everyday. It even took you several visits to your Grandma's to really get excited about seeing her.

Today we went to the doctor's office again (this time for your nine month check-up; everything is good!) and as we played patiently in the vacant waiting room, I suddenly heard someone talking to you. A young nurse working behind the adminstrative desk had caught you eyeing her and started talking to you... You weren't eyeing her skeptically, though. You were smiling and laughing at her.

Your mom and I have no idea why you felt so comfortable around her instantly... Maybe she reminds you of someone??

Tonight your "Uncle" Ben and "Aunt" Danielle came for a visit and you were quite excited. You LOVE being around Aunt Danielle and when you are not in her arms, you try to get there by batting your eyes and tilting your head at her from across the room. (She loves all this attention, by the way!)

You must be "coming out of your shell" (as they say...)

Day 280 : Early Bird Catches the Smiles

Sadie -

Your mom went in your room to wake you up this morning and you were still in dreamland. She said your name and a huge smile and giggle started. You could hardly open your eyes, because they weren't used to the light, but you were instantly glad to be awake! You must know it is Friday!

We dressed you this morning in a new shirt that your mom's friend Lori got you. It is yellow with a picture of a stroller on it and it says "This is how I roll."

Trust me, you'll get it later in life!

Day 279 : Nose-y

Sadie -

Mom brought you into the bathroom for "rub-a-dubs" (as we call it!) the other night while I was finishing running your bathwater. I was sitting on the edge of the tub and turned and looked up to see you hanging from your mom's arms - in nothing but a diaper, of course - just inches from my face. You had a very amused look on your face and went directly for my nose. You started pinching it, completely unprovoked or teased. The more you did this, the more amused you seemed and thus, the more amused your mom and I both became.

If you think my nose is funny because it is big, I've got news for you - that sucker is genetically dominant. Your nose could grow to be quite large, too...

Day 278 : BoingaBoinga

Sadie -

As you get more and more aware of how to shift your wheight on your feet, the more noise you can make in your bouncy chair (which I am afraid you are quickly going to outgrow...). You have even started to make it sway back and forth when you get tired of moving up and down.

You and your mom have a game. When you are sitting still in the chair, she'll look at you and say, "BOINGA-BOINGA-BOINGA!" You then promptly begin jumping up and down to make the chair make a similar sound. Mom will let you do this for a few seconds and then say "STOP!" You immediately halt and wait for mom to once again say "BOINGA!"

I try this game with you, too, but you seem to think of it as something just for you and mom. (Or you just don't like listening to me when I say "stop"?!?!)

Day 277 : Blowin' in the Wind

Sadie -

Mom was excited when I got home tonight. She told me that when you left pre-school this afternoon, she jokingly asked you to say goodbye by blowing a kiss at your teacher - and then YOU DID IT!

Of course, it wasn't exactly a "kiss" - more your version of the custom. You smacked your lips at her from across the room. You are learning to take instruction and you are starting to understand gestures and greetings. It is amazing how quickly you are becoming so aware of the world and how to be a person in it...

Day 276 : Baby Brain

Sadie -

I had a coupon for a large discount on a single item at my favorite book and music store in town, so you and your mom and I went yesterday. Your mom and I both looked for items for ourselves, but couldn't find anything we really wanted, so we decided to find something for you.

As soon as we walked into the children's section, I saw the book I wanted to get you from across the room. It was big and red and was called "Baby Brain Superstar." On the front cover was a drawing of a baby in a diaper wielding an electric guitar!! The story is about a baby musical prodigy who starts a rock band!

We bought the book and I read it to you on our short drive home. And then again... And then more tonight!

I may like this silly book more than you right now... But I am just glad you let me read it to you repetitively!

Day 275 : Sing Sing

Sades -

You were not happy being left in the church nursery this morning, so after leaving you there and letting you cry it out for awhile, I went and rescued you near the end of the adult church service. We sneaked back in to the grown-up congregation just in time for the last song of the day. We stood and started to sing and suddenly you became animated. As mom held you, you kicked your feet and flailed your arms and you hummed. You were singing with us!

Friends sitting across from us in the congregation even noticed your excitement.

I am SO GLAD that you like music so much already!

Day 274 : Two Stooges (and You!)

Sadie -

This morning, you and your mom and I went to Meijer so your mom could look at some dresses she has been wanting to buy. You were in the cart playing with your shopping toy mat and I was trying to help your mom pick up some dresses that had fallen off of a rack. As we both attempted to reach and re-rack the clothing, your mother, in a very accidental way, hit me in the forehead with a hanger that then caused me to rear back out of surprise.

We started to chuckle at the comedy of the situation when we suddenly heard someone else having a laugh... IT WAS YOU! You had seen the whole thing and were CRACKING UP with cute giggles at what you had seen. This just made your mom and I laugh even harder...

Day 273 : Blanket Statement

Sadie -

Up until recently, your mom and I have been very cautious about letting you have ANYTHING in your crib (besides you and a sheet, of course!) But as you get older and more mobile and alert, you have started to form quite an attachment to a certain blanket.

This is normal. Most kids have some sort of "lovie" item they use to help calm themselves and to make themselves feel comfortable. Your light little blanket is quite the sleep charm, too. When we are getting ready for bed, I just lean you onto my shoulder and give you the blanket and you are almost asleep within minutes.

Most nights I still come take the blanket out of your crib after you have fallen asleep, though. You can never be too careful, right?

Day 272 : Pea on the Floor

Sadie -

You and your mom and I ate at your mom's favorite place tonight: BD's Mongolian Grill. We set you up at the table in a high chair and gave you tortilla and some peas that we brought from home.

Peas are a little hard for you to grip, so for every one you got in your mouth, about three or four fell on the floor. By the end of our time there, peas surrounded the entire side of the table you were on.

Your Grandpa would have said that someone "pea-ed on the floor" (a reference to a silly story I'll tell you when you are older...)

The waiter said I didn't have to clean them up, but I didn't mind. I am just so glad you are adapting so well to eating table food.

Day 271 : Peek - A - Freak Out

Sadie -

You scared your mom and I so badly tonight.

It started yesterday, actually.

I was feeding you breakfast, and near the end of the meal I noticed that you started squinting your eyes and grimacing at the end of each bite. I was worried at first, but you quickly asked for another bite and we finished the meal soon thereafter. I didn't think about this again until today.

Today your mom was feeding you and you started with the same behavior. Because you have been sick and have had a cough, we got really worried that something was wrong with your throat. This went on for several bites and mom was on the verge of calling the doctor, when suddenly we noticed you smiling.

It seems - we have since figured out - that you have been playing a game with us.
You have been playing peek-a-boo with the concept that if you can't see us then we can't see you. You must be getting board near the end of the meal and think that a little recreation might make the process of finishing your food more fun.

Mom and I have had several laughs about this now - but you REALLY scared us at first!

You have such a funny sense of humor...

Day 270 : Happy Birthday, Mom!

Sadie -

Today is special! Your mom celebrates her birthday today. And, of course - if she hadn't been born, you would not have been born (and I'd be really lonely!)

I put a DVD that we bought for your mom as a birthday present in your crib before you woke up this morning so that when she went in to get your day started she would find it. She thought it was hilarious to see it there!

We have also worked up a funny birthday song-and-dance routine for your mom where I hold you and move your arms while singing in a goofy, high-pitched voice. Your mom laughs every time we do it.

Give Mom extra kisses today!

Day 269 : Rest(less)

Sadie -

You woke up with such a jolt last night that it caused your mom and I to wake up out of deep sleep instantly and sit straight up in bed.

The clock said "11:00 PM."

We tried to let you calm down on your own, but you seemed very shaken. When I finally picked you up out of the crib the crying stopped but I could feel your short breath. This congestion and ear ache must have been really getting to you.

Eventually I gave you some milk and some medicine, but you seemed most in need of some quality time. I made us a mat on the floor in the middle of your room and laid you on my chest and wrapped us up in blankets. You fell asleep quickly and so did I.

Mom woke me up after a half hour and I put you back in your crib with no trouble and we heard little from you the rest of the night.

Day 268 : Give Me

Sadie -

The developments in you just keep taking form.

Mom was in charge of the church nursery this morning and you kept her company with the other kids there. She fed you lunch during this time and you wolfed down a lot of banana and other food. She got out some fruity cheerios to give to other children in the nursery and you turned all your attention to the cereal box, making it quite apparant that you wanted to try some.

Mom commented that it is quite an adjustement to have you able to execute or at least make known your own free-will all of the sudden.

I think this is where this parenting stuff might start to get a little more challenging... But I'm ready. Bring it on!

Day 267 : Sunny and Share

Sadie -

You have been acting like you don't feel well and I noticed when I got home last night that you were running a fever.

Mom and I took you to the doctor this morning to find out you do indeed have another ear infection. The doctor told us to pay special attention to your right ear since that is where you keep getting these infections.

Mom was snuggling you at the doctor's office today while you chewed on one of your toys. Joking with you, mom asked you if she could have a bite. You responded by taking the toy out of your mouth and putting it in hers!!

This is a huge step in understanding how to relate to others! I am glad you are already learning to share.

Day 266 : Pick Yourself Up

Sadie -

I've noticed recently that when we rough-house and roll around on the living room floor, you have suddenly found some new strength.

While you have been rolling around on your own for some time and sitting up on your own for sometime, you have now learned to put the actions together. You were sprawled across my legs tonight when you suddenly decided you wanted to sit up. And that is just what you did - you went from lying on your back to sitting straight up, all on your own.

Next thing I know, you are going to be playing Solitaire in your crib when I come to wake you up from your nap...

Day 265 : Proof is in the Pudding

Sadie -

So today at pre-school it was "texture" day. Your teachers were showing your class how different substances feel different to the touch.

I am not sure what all the textures you felt were, but one in particular made you particularly happy. Your friend at school Miss Lizzy thought it was so funny she sent a picture of it to your mom.

Let me just describe the picture:

You are seated in a high chair, shirtless and with your hands in the air. The rest of the picture is pretty much just made up of smeared sugar-free pudding - EVERYWHERE! You had it smeared on your face and arms, all over the tray of the high chair...

Let's just say I am glad I didn't have to clean it up, but everytime I look at the picture I have to fight off a hysterical fit of laughter. You look extremely captivated by the whole event.

Day 264 : Repeat-er

Sadie –

You hit another amazing milestone this week! Mom started making a popping with her mouth and you started doing it back to her! This may not sound like a huge deal, but the process that goes into seeing or hearing something and then being able to repeat it is complicated and important.

Now that I think about it, it is also overwhelming and scary for me… Please don’t start repeating me when I accidentally say a bad word, okay?

Day 263 : Give Me Liberty or Give Me ... Cereal?

Sadie –

You are getting to be so independent! Feeding you used to be a long involved process, but it is becoming less that way every day. Most meal times now I just strap you into your chair and hand you a bottle. When you get done drinking, I pile some finger food on your tray and let you feed yourself. You are getting so good at doing this!

Of course, cleaning up after you eat is a little more involved now… In fact, most days there is usually a moment that happens a half hours or so after you finish eating when the light hits the back of your head or the top of you face a certain way and I realize that you have banana goo or sweet potato dried to your skin somewhere. Hey – nobody said learning to feed yourself wasn’t dirty work!

Day 262 : Cooler Than You

Sadie –

Your Dee Dee and Pops were out of town last week so they came over for dinner and to see you tonight when they got back. They were playing with you on the living room floor when I got home this evening. I walked in and said “hello” to you and your grandparents thought it quite cute that you suddenly lost interest in them and got very excited to see me.

Before you were born I had several people tell me that one of the best things about being a dad is the look of excitement you receive when you walk in the door after a long day at the office. I have to agree! What you might not realize is that I am just as excited to see you!

Day 261 : Water You Doing?

Saders –

You and your mom and I went to the Six Flags water park in town again today. The last time we went with you, you still weren’t sure what to think of bathing suits and inner tubes and getting wet outside of the bathtub. But since then, we’ve taken you out to the pool several times and you have grown quite fond of summertime water fun.

We went on the lazy river this afternoon and I thought you were going to jump off of my lap and out of the inner tube we were floating in! You were so excited about touching the water. You were lunging and leaning over me trying to touch the cool water for the entire three trips we made around the course.

We even let you stand on the edge of the wave pool. That is right – I was supporting your lumbering upper half while you tried out putting weight on your legs and standing in the water. Waves lapped at your feet and you seemed to really enjoy it. At one point, we even got hit with a big wave that slapped you in the face, but you didn’t get upset. You are fascinated by the water. (This is good, because your mom LOVES water and you loving it will make all of your childhood summers that much easier!)

Day 260 : Antlers and Snack Cakes

Sadie –

Our cousin Rachel got married in a town a few hours away today. I went to the ceremony but you and mom stayed at home. After your lunch, mom took you to the library and found books to read with you. One of them is called “If you Give a Moose a Muffin.” She read that to you this afternoon and you enjoyed touching the colored pictures.

I missed you lots at the wedding today, but I think it was good that you didn’t go. I did see a little girl there who is almost exactly your age, and by the reception tonight she was having a hard time happily keeping her eyes open. I am glad you got to have a more comfortable day with mom and a moose and a muffin!

Day 259 : The Fourth of July

Sades –

Today is the “4th of July” – also known as Independence Day. Every year on this day, Americans get a day off work to eat, swim, and set off fireworks in remembrance of how our country was founded. You’ll learn about all of the specifics of this when you get older. For now, just know that today is a family day of fun.

Our friend Brian and our friends Steve and Sam and their daughters, Abigail and Joanna, all came over for dinner tonight. We ate corn on the cob and played cards and had a really good time. Abigail thinks you are something special. She spent the parts of the evening when you were both awake trying to attend to your every need. At one point – with all the best intentions – she got you completely barricaded by your toys because she was trying to make sure you had plenty to play with!

See! – I am not the only one who loves being around you!

Day 258 : It's My Party...

Sadie -

I took you to pre-school today and you did something you'd never done before. I sat you down when we arrived and you promptly burst into tears.

They say kids always go through a phase where they don't want to be seperated from their parents, but I was not ready for yours to start today.

I think you haven't been feeling good lately and have a little diaper rash which definitely added to your anxiety today.

I hate leaving you when you are crying, but I can't ALWAYS be with you. I sure am glad you like hanging out with me so much, though!

Day 257 : Puff the Magic Sadie

Sades -

I got you up this morning and you were starving. I put you in your chair and handed you your bottle. You started sucking it down right away and I turned to do something in the kitchen. A minute or two later I heard you stop drinking and your mom suddenly laughed. I looked over and you were eating a cereal puff - but I hadn't given you any cereal yet. While you were drinking you found it in your chair, leftover from the day before!

Your grandpa would be proud! He loves to eat old and left-over food!

Day 256 : What's Up(chuck)

Hey Sades!

Funny story...

Tonight we went out for dinner (you, your mom, and me). When we finished up the delicious Thai (your mom and I have really been missing Thai food recently... When we lived in Arkansas we used to ate at this great little place called... never mind... That's a whole other story that doesn't pertain to the story I am telling now... I tend to get off on tangents sometimes...)

Anyway, after dinner the three of us walked around the mall for a few minutes. I was holding you and mom was goofing off with you by ducking behind polls and walls and playing peek-a-boo. I decided that we should play back with her. You and I ducked into a corner to hide from mom and I heard something hit the ground. I turned to look and didn't see anything. Mom was laughing when we came out but looked concerned. She pointed to a puddle on the ground and then motioned to my shirt sleeve.

Without changing your expression AT ALL, you had thrown up a little of your dinner. You weren't phased at all.

We quit playing peek-a-boo and headed home.

Hours later I realized I never changed my shirt. I just rolled my sleeve up to hide where you had spit up on me.

I guess I am OFFICIALLY a dad now!

Day 255 : The Monkey and the Vacuum Cleaner

Sadie -

I often refer to you as "monkey" due to the way you hang on me when I am holding you. But now I have a second reason to nickname you after the zoo animal: you really like fresh bananas!

I fed you your breakfast today, but you still seemed hungry. I cut up a few pieces of banana and you ate them with much enthusiasm. Tonight, after eating several different dishes for dinner, you again seemed unsatisfied. What calmed your craving? Fresh banana!

I can't say I dislike your newfound fruit affection - because I get to eat the remainder of the banana when you finish. And I really like bananas, too!

Something you don't like? - The vacuum cleaner! I pulled it out to clean the carpets after dinner tonight and, even when you were in a different part of the house, you had trouble playing or even smiling because of all the noise. I don't like to upset you, but the carpets have to be cleaned sometimes, and it is better to do it when you are awake then when you are asleep (Trust me!).

Day 254 : Sunday at the Park

Sadie -

Today was unseasonably cool, so after lunch you and your mom and I went to a park near our house. It was the first time you ever got to swing in a swing and you seemed to like it. I put you in my lap and we slid down a slide, too.

The best part of the afternoon was when the three of us found a big shade tree and laid around in the grass. You kept trying to eat the grass and clovers! It was so comfortable and relaxing to just lounge around with you.

We'll have many more afternoons in the park as you grow up!

Day 253 : Cookout Supplies

Sadie -

Your Grandma (Dee Dee) called this morning to see if we wanted to be a part of a cookout at her house this evening. We said we'd love to and I asked if we needed to bring anything. In the background of the phone call I heard your Grandpa say, "Make sure they bring Sadie!"

OF COURSE!!

We did go to the cookout and you ate a lot of grilled chicken. You seemed to really like it.

Your grandpa always says he likes to be around you while you eat because you seem to enjoy it so much. You tend to make quite a few satisfied noises while your mom or I help you shovel food down your throat.

You make meal time lots of fun!

Day 252 : Cartin' Around

Sadie -

Mom was quite excited to show me some pictures on her phone when I saw you two after work tonight. Evidently she had taken you to the store with her after she picked you up from school today. She had pictures of you in the front of the grocery cart playing and smiling. We've taken you to the grocery and put you in the cart before, but you've you've always had trouble getting comfortable or staying seated. That was not the case tonight. Mom said you were having quite a fun time and really liked it when the cart rolled over some bumpy surface or tiles.

I am glad you are now ready for the world of grocery shopping. Just don't start taking stuff off the shelves yet!

Day 251 : M Sounds

Sadie -

At dinner tonight you started making a new noise that got your mom very excited. While she was feeding you, you just suddenly looked at her and made a noise that went something like this:

"uuuuuhMMMMMMMeh"

Of course, this sound alone is not that significant - except for the fact that it is the first sound we've heard from you that significantly features the letter "m." And you know what word starts with the letter "m"?

You got it : Mom.

Your mom immediately launched into the game where she says "mommomomomomo" over and over in hopes that you'll repeat her. It didn't work. But that little sound was enough to satisfy your mom for now.

You just need to keep working on the "om" part of the word!

Day 250 : (Eichen)Burger in Paradise

Sadie -

You'll soon learn that my favorite food of all time is the (at least quasi-American creation of a) cheeseburger.

I'll look at a new restaurant menu for 15 minutes and still decide upon a cheeseburger when the waiter comes. I can't help it. I love juicy, messy cheeseburgers with mustard all over them - and that is why your mom made some tonight.

We cut a hamburger patty into tiny pieces and let you try some. You seemed to really like it, though the meat by itself was a little dry for you. Don't worry... It won't be long before you get to have a hamburger in full glory - with peppers and cheese and mustard and lettuce...

Trust me - you ain't tasted anything yet! But I am very glad you seem to initially like hamburgers. We'll have many together in the coming years. (Quite a few will likely be from this nasty but delicious restaurant your mom refuses to go to with us - It's called McDonalds. As if a cheeseburger wasn't enough, they'll give you a free toy with your sandwich!)

Day 249 : Movin' On Up

Sadie -

Your mom got a letter from your pre-school today that announced you will soon be making a change. You have been cleared to be promoted on to the next "grade" or room at the pre-school. It is not a far jump. You will still be next door to Miss Melissa and the other friends you've made from your first room, but because you are getting so big, it is time for you to move on to this next step. To get you ready, the school let you visit your new room today, and you must feel comfortable already - you took two long naps! (You rarely do this at all any more.)

Mom said she got choked up talking to your Aunt Amy about your promotion today. I have to agree with her assessment: it sure does seem like you are growing up a little TOO fast!

Day 248 : Hand Over Fist

Sadie -

Again, let me point out that you are quite the study-er.

When you see new people or enter new situations, you are all eyes and ears, doing your best to decipher the situation to your own understanding.

Because of this trait, like I've written before, you seem to suddenly acquire skills instead of gradually learning them.

Mom and I have been trying to teach you about feeding yourself for the last few weeks. We put finger foods on your dinner tray and help you put them in your mouth. You have been picking them up and occasionally getting them near your mouth, but tonight you looked like a pro.

As soon as I put a noodle down on your tray, you reached down, picked it up and put it in your mouth with one smooth motion. It was like you'd been feeding yourself for years!

Mom and I looked at each other in shock!

Congrats! You've passed another milestone!

Day 247 : I Know What Boys Like...

Sadie -

I asked your mom tonight if she thought it was weird that I already find myself often worrying about how boys will treat you when you are a teenager. She told me, "NOT AT ALL!"

I have become the stereotypical dad that frets about you dating and falling in with the wrong kind of boys and says "I know what boys think - I used to be one!"

I hold you when we are playing and look at you smiling at me and worry that one day you'll slam the door in my face and tell me you hate me and that I don't understand you and that whatever boy you like that I won't let you go out with is "a good guy."

Even then I'll probably just say, "I know what boys think - I used to be one!"

Day 246 : Random Reminder and Thanks

Sadie -

You, your mom and I once again set out to see some yard sales this morning. We came across a large neighborhood sale, and happened up to a particular house where the woman who owned it seemed quite taken by you. She came up to you and talked to you and told your mom and I that she thought you were beautiful.

Mom thought this woman looked really familiar, but couldn't figure out where we might know her from.

"I work with babies," the woman said, "but I usually don't see any that are this big..."

I thought she must have mis-spoken. I figured she meant to say she usually didn't see babies this small. Mom asked the lady where she worked.

"Kosair Children's Hospital."

It suddenly all "clicked." We recognized this lady because she was one of your nurses when you were in the hospital after you were born! Mom almost cried. We told the lady that she once took care of you. She said she was sooo glad to see you healthy! We thanked the nurse for doing such good work!

Day 245 : Future You

Sadie -

I saw a picture of your cousin Jasmine tonight that was taken around her first birthday. Now, at going on 4 years of age, Jasmine has lots and lots of hair, but on her first birthday, she had very little. Your mom and I laughed tonight that this will most likely be the case with you.

I often wonder what you will look like as you grow older. I see baby pictures of your cousin and even myself and see how much babies change. I wonder what color your hair will be, and hope that your eyes will always stay such a striking blue color.

I am looking forward to the future - but I LOVE the present!

Stay bald as long as you need to...

Day 244 : Strange(r) But True

Sadie -

I still haven't tired of taking you out in public so people can tell me how beautiful you are. Tonight you, your mom and I went out to eat chicken at Buffalo Wild Wings (50-cent boneless night!!). Halfway through our meal, a few older grandma-types came into the restaurant and were seated at a table behind us. They tried talking to you but you stayed very stoic throughout. I told them that you usually take some time to "check out" the new people you come in contact with - and if they pass your "test," they may get a smile or giggle out of you. These ladies made a good point - once you get older, I'll be busy telling you not to talk to strangers! No wonder kids get confused! When you are little, we insist on you smiling and being friendly with people you don't know and as you get older we insist you keep to yourself.

There will be time for actual stranger safety lessons in the future, but for now know that being polite is always okay!

Day 243 : Three-iversary

Sadie –

Today is a special day for our family. Three years ago on this day, your mom and I were married. We were hoping even then that we would one day have a beautiful baby girl!

To celebrate our anniversary, mom and I went out to dinner and to see a movie. (Your Pops came over to hang out with you while we were gone.) Your mom and I set out to celebrate each other – and we did. But we still found ourselves looking at pictures of you on our cell phones at dinner and talking about how much we love you!

You seem like the perfect addition to accent the relationship between your mom and I. It is hard to understand until you get older, but when you love someone so completely – the way your mom and I love each other – it only makes sense to create a third life out of that love. You are that life for us and we couldn’t be happier about you!

Day 242 : Pizza Party

Sadie –

It is really turning into a family week of sorts! We had a pizza party over at Aunt Amy’s house tonight. You got to see your Cousin Jasmine and your current favorite extended family member, Uncle Steve!

We joke that you like your Uncle Steve so much because you both have the same hairstyle (bald!).

You’ve had a little trouble sleeping the last week. I think this might have to do with the fact that it doesn’t get dark until after 9:30 PM this time of year! (I hate going to sleep when it is light outside, too!) Your mom hung a dark blanket over your window tonight, and we are hoping this helps you sleep a little deeper at night.

Day 241 : Like Father/Like Son/Like Daughter

Sadie –

Your Dee Dee has a work commitment that has taken her out of town for most of the next two weeks, so you, your mom and I had Pops over for dinner tonight. You were very excited to see him – so much so that you had trouble eating your dinner. You just wanted to smile and giggle at your grandpa. Of course, he can’t help but goof off with you when you are looking at him. We finally had to ask him to stop making faces at you for a few minutes so you could finish eating. I can’t blame him for wanting to play with you – I have to fight the urge to distract you while you are eating on a daily basis!

Day 240 : Father Time

Sades –

Today is Father’s Day. It is a Sunday in June that is set aside every year for people to celebrate their dads. You and your mom got me lots of candy and a CD to show your appreciation for me. You must have known that it was a special day because you seemed especially loving and affectionate towards me, as well. We had lunch with Dee Dee and Pops (because Pops is MY dad!) and this afternoon you, your mom, your Uncle Joel and I all went swimming for awhile.

I made sure to tell you today that you make being a dad easy. It is better than I could have imagined!
